Not every overwatered plant needs the same response, and I think a lot of advice treats “stop watering and hope” as the answer regardless of severity. After rescuing plants at several different stages of overwatering damage — from mild soil sogginess to advanced root rot — I’ve found the right response really does depend on … Read more
I’d always fertilized inconsistently — sometimes monthly, sometimes forgetting for half a year, without ever really knowing if it made a measurable difference. So last growing season I ran an actual comparison: I picked six plants with a duplicate or close match in my collection, fertilized one of each pair on a consistent schedule, and … Read more
I added plants to my bedroom specifically because of claims I’d read about them purifying the air and boosting oxygen while I slept. Three plants later, I don’t think that’s really why my sleep improved, and I think it’s worth being honest about that distinction rather than repeating the same claims every other plant blog … Read more
I ran a soil-based indoor herb garden for about a year before a friend gave me a hand-me-down Aerogarden, and rather than replacing my soil setup, I kept both running side by side for several months out of curiosity. That comparison ended up teaching me more about what actually matters for growing herbs indoors than … Read more
I started indoor gardening with a single basil plant on a windowsill and, within about a year, ended up with a small dedicated shelf running two grow lights, growing lettuce, herbs, and a somewhat ambitious cherry tomato attempt. Along the way I’ve had genuine successes and a couple of outright failures, and I think the … Read more
I used to treat houseplant care as a fixed routine — water on the same day every week, fertilize whenever I remembered, done. What changed things was keeping rough notes for about two years on when my plants actually struggled or thrived, which made it obvious that my routine needed to shift with the seasons … Read more
Most roundups of low-maintenance indoor plants describe every single entry with the same handful of words — “forgiving,” “tolerates neglect,” “perfect for beginners.” Having actually owned most of the plants that show up on these lists, I can say that description hides real differences between them. Some are forgiving of everything. Some are forgiving of … Read more
I found my Monstera on the clearance shelf of a hardware store garden section, marked down because it looked, in the employee’s own words, “pretty rough.” Several leaves were yellow or fully brown, the stem near the soil line felt suspiciously soft when I pressed it, and the whole plant had a slight lean like … Read more
I used to buy a single bag of generic potting soil and use it for everything I owned — my pothos, my succulents, a fern, even an orchid at one particularly misguided point. It took losing that orchid, and watching several succulents struggle in soil that stayed wet for days, before I understood that “indoor … Read more
My rubber plant dropped four leaves in its first month with me, which felt alarming given how large and dramatic each glossy leaf is on this plant — losing one feels like a much bigger deal than losing a leaf from a smaller houseplant. I went through a stretch of overcorrecting, watering more, then less, … Read more
